Topic: “Recent SHRM Foundation Research to Advance Our
Profession” – presented by Hanna Lyle, a member of the
SHRM Foundation Board of Directors.
The SHRM Foundation was founded in 1966 as a 501 (c)(3)
not-for-profit affiliate of the Society for Human
Resource Management (SHRM). It is governed by a
volunteer Board of Directors from the HR profession,
including academics, practitioners and representatives
from SHRM. The Foundation funds research, publications
and education to advance the HR profession and enhance
the effectiveness of HR professionals. To support its
important work, the SHRM Foundation conducts an annual
fundraising campaign. All contributions to the
Foundation are tax-deductible.
The Foundation promotes research, innovation and the use
of research-based knowledge. With an annual budget of
approximately $1 million, it funds major research
projects that have a direct and practical impact in
advancing the HR profession. The Foundation puts out
RFP’s to the research community and then evaluates the
research proposals it receives. Using its "LIVE"
criteria: L-Leverage, I-Impact, V-Visibility, E-Enhances
the profession, the Foundation selects projects to fund.

The cost for advertising for a six-month time period is $400, the full amount which must be paid in advance. In

Dear GSHRM Members,
Congratulations to George Hammett
and a dedicated committee on a successful Tri-State
Conference. It was one of our best, according to
the feedback by participants and vendors. An
unexpected medical condition caused us to change
keynote speakers at the final hour. However, we
could not have been more fortunate to have Phil and
Bonnie Parker step in as Keynote and concurrent
session presenters. As soon as all of the
accounting is complete, we will let you know the
financial results of our annual fundraiser. The
2006 Tri-State conference will be held September
13th at the Expo.
The
conference followed closely behind the Hurricane
Katrina tragedy. At the conference a fundraiser for
the victims, led by Heidi McIlwain, yielded $1,000
in contributions which was matched 1:1 by GSHRM.
Two thousand dollars has been given to the American
Red Cross in the name of GSHRM. Thank you all that
contributed!
Many
GSHRM members have expressed a desire to work
collectively to aid the evacuees that have come into
our community. One of the best organized employment
resources to aid the evacuees with jobs, interview
skills, resume writing, etc, is Workforce
Development in cooperation with the Employment
Security Commission. Employers are encouraged to
post open positions with the ESC and contact the ESC
to volunteer resources for other services.
I hope
many of you have had the chance to meet a new face
at the registration table at the conference. Janine
Gieck has been retained to handle the administration
and special projects for GSHRM. She has an office
support business in Simpsonville and will be working
behind the scenes for our organization.
Ballots for 2006 Board and officers will be mailed
out to you soon. The proposed board is as follows:

I look
forward to seeing you at the October 4th
membership meeting. The focus will be on how recent
SHRM foundation research is helping to advance our
profession and business. We are so fortunate to
have Lyle Hanna, SPHR from the SHRM foundation board
of directors present the latest in research. Please
plan to join me.
Ginger,

Opportunity Knocks
Worker’s Compensation Reform
Working in partnership with Donald Van Riper of
Collins and Lacy, Attorneys in Columbia, SC (former
South Carolina State Workers Compensation
Commissioner), GSHRM is requesting the support of
the HR community to ensure Workers Compensation
reform!
Issue: Insurance companies are seeking premium
increases in the range of 33%.
Issue: The need for business-friendly
commissioners.
Issue: A level playing field regarding
medical fees and access to medical information.
Write as many letters as possible
requesting:
1) Legislative
reversal of the holding in Brown verses Bi-lo, so
that carriers and employers can have free access to
the medical reports allegedly injured workers.
2) The
statutory reinstitution of a requirement where in
medically complex cases, the claimant must prove
causation in his/her case by expert medical
testimony.
3) A
requirement that all injuries by accident must arise
out of a specific, defined (work-related) event.
4) A
requirement that all medical records must be
furnished to the opposing parties upon their
receipt.
5) A
requirement that all claims under the SC Workers
Compensation Act must be administered by a claims
office located within South Carolina.
6) A
requirement that an insurance adjuster attend all
hearings before the SC Workers Compensation
Commission.
7) A limitation
on contingency fees of claimant’s lawyers that
exceed $15,000, unless it is shown after a separate
hearing that the case was of unusual difficulty and
involved an unusual amount of time.
8) Set medical
fees for Worker’s Compensation at the same level as
Medicare fees.
9) Workers
Compensation cases should be settled as quickly as
possible
since delay increases
administrative costs and
awards.
10) Establish
incentives for companies that invest in and promote
wellness
programs.
11) Establish
penalties for physicians who exploit worker’s
compensation
benefits.

VERY IMPORTANT
SECOND STEP
Write Governor Sanford
and ask that his next two appointments be (a)
lawyers who (b) have primarily represented industry
and businesses before the SC Workers Commission. As
with all politicians, let him know that this is a
singularly important issue with you, and that your
support for his office is dependent upon it.
